Here is my current wardrobe to give you an idea. For example, I'm a relatively outdoorsy man and I also work as a maintenance man, so it's easy to do. Make sure the clothing can double as lifestyle/work clothing as well. If, on the other hand, what you'll wear is the least important aspect of formal events, keep or invest in one nice, well-fitting, versatile dress or suit that you can wear to everything and don't give it another thought. If you're the type to enjoy dressing up and always love to get invited to a wedding or other fancy event so you have an excuse to buy a new outfit, embrace it don't keep your dresses since you will never want to re-wear them anyway. So, my informal jeans and T-shirts and sneakers have a color scheme so do my semi-formal skirts and tops and nice shoes they're not the same color scheme, but they don't have to be, since I'm not likely to mix and match across clusters.ĭon't devote a lot of your closet to "special occasion" clothes. I find that too limiting, but I have a couple of clusters of clothing-basically related to levels of formality and time of year-and everything goes with everything WITHIN the cluster. Some people will tell you to stick to a color scheme and have everything basically go with everything else. (Trading/borrowing is good for that, too, if you have friends your size.) Buying secondhand can be a great way of finding well-made gems for low cost and/or a relatively low-cost way to experiment with a new style that you're not sure about. Buy infrequently, but when you do, buy well-made items. This will keep you from suddenly buying something you can't use because you someone cool wearing it in a magazine.ĭon't buy poor quality clothes that will quickly break or stretch out, no matter how cheap. If you still want it 30 days later, you can buy it. When you want something, put it on the list with the date. Don't worry about seeming to wear the same clothes over and over nobody cares.ĭon't make impulse purchases. Wear out your "favorites" then replace them, rather than spacing them out with a bunch of subpar non-favorites. Get rid of things you don't enjoy wearing or that never seem appropriate for the occasions in your life.
